Carta del embajador de Estados Unidos en Madrid, Terence A. Todman, al ministro de Asuntos Exteriores José Pedro Pérez-Llorca, fechada el 27 de febrero de 1981.
Todman transmite adjunta la carta del secretario de Estado Alexander Haig y el texto de la declaración oficial del Departamento de Estado del 24 de febrero sobre la supervivencia de la democracia en España. Señala que dicha declaración complementó para el registro público los comentarios que el presidente Reagan hizo al Rey Juan Carlos por teléfono ese mismo día.
El embajador expresa que su gobierno, al igual que él personalmente, se alegró profundamente de que las instituciones democráticas españolas resistieran una prueba tan ardua. Aprovecha la ocasión para felicitar a Pérez-Llorca por su nombramiento como ministro de Asuntos Exteriores.

Dear Mr. Minister and friend:
I have the honor to transmit to Your Excellency the attached message from the Honorable Alexander M. Haig, Secretary of State of the United States of America.
I am also enclosing with the message from Secretary Haig the text of the official announcement made on February 24 by the Department of State concerning the survival of democracy in Spain. This statement supplemented for the public record the comments made to King Juan Carlos by President Reagan by telephone on the same day. As you can see, my Government was, as was I, deeply pleased that Spain's democratic institutions stood the strain of such an arduous test.
Permit me to take advantage of this opportunity to express my desire to continue our close cooperation as Minister of Foreign Affairs. I look forward to continuing to work closely with you on matters of concern to our two great nations.
